Green rooms in Södermalm – allotment gardens, parks and the city's breath

It starts in the stillness.
A path between allotments. Soil under the nails. Something that sprouts.

Here in Södermalm there is a different story than the one about stone city and traffic.
A story about people who longed for air, light and something of their own to cultivate.

At the turn of the century, new ideas are emerging.
Anna Lindhagen and Anna Åbergsson are inspired by the allotment movement in Germany and want to give more Stockholmers the opportunity to cultivate – not only to survive, but also for health, community and quality of life.

We wander through parks, plots and green rooms where history still lives on.
Here, potatoes were grown that helped feed a growing city.
Here, tobacco grew on the slopes down towards Årstaviken.
And between the trees you can sense traces of summer evenings filled with music, theater and people who sought rest from the city's congestion.

This is a city walk at a leisurely pace through Södermalm's green history – between terraces, stairs and winding walkways that connect the past and present.

During the walk, we also stop for coffee and something small and sweet in the greenery 🌿

We end at Zinkensdamm, where cultivation still lives on and the city still feels a little softer to breathe in.

This is what you will experience:

🌿 Allotment gardens and parks – in the middle of the city
🌿 The story of how green rooms became a social idea
🌿 Potatoes, tobacco and everyday life in Söder
🌿 Traces of open-air theater and older park environments
🌿 Söder's heights – stairs, views and hidden paths
