More about the tour
Step into another Stockholm
City walk in Stockholm – with the architecture of Lärkstaden and Villastaden.
Current dates: May 25, July 19 and August 31.
Imagine a city where every street carries a thought.
Where the houses are not just buildings – but expressions of dreams, conflicts and visions.
On this city walk in Stockholm, we move through some of Östermalm's most fascinating neighborhoods – from Humlegården and Villastaden to Danderydsgatan, Lärkstaden and Engelbrektskyrkan.
This is not just a walk through beautiful environments.
It is a walk through Stockholm's architectural history, urban planning and the people who shaped the city around the turn of the century 1900.
Here, national romanticism, art nouveau and early urban visions meet a calmer and greener Stockholm.
🌳 Humlegården – where the story begins
We start in Humlegården.
A place that today feels obvious and peaceful – but which for a long time was in the middle of a Stockholm in rapid change.
Here August Strindberg wandered during a time when the city grew, modernized and was discussed intensively. New ideas about society, culture and urban development took shape.
Behind the park's tranquility is the story of a Stockholm on its way to something new.
🏡 Villastaden – architecture, status and hidden worlds
From Humlegården's greenery, we step into Villastaden.
Suddenly the rhythm of the city changes.
The streets become quieter.
The houses bigger.
And the architecture more personal.
Here we meet some of Stockholm's most exclusive city villas from the turn of the century – built for industrialists, cultural figures and the social elite.
Towers, bay windows, ornaments and details tell of status, taste and ambition. But behind the facades there were also salons, networks and ideas that came to influence both Stockholm and Sweden.
🧱 Danderydsgatan – a different pace
We continue along Danderydsgatan.
Here you can see the difference between the older stone city's straight grid and the softer urban ideals that began to emerge around the turn of the century 1900.
Brick facades, roof lines and quiet street spaces create a different pace.
A calmer and more human Stockholm.
🏘 Lärkstaden – when urban planning becomes art
Then Lärkstaden opens up – one of Stockholm's most well-thought-out areas for architecture and urban planning.
The area was planned by Per Olof Hallman who wanted to create a city where greenery, variation and human scale were given more space than in the older stone city.
Here the streets meander between national romantic facades, small front yards, towers and asymmetrical blocks.
This is what makes Lärkstaden unique:
a district where architecture, nature and city life interact in a way that still feels alive over a hundred years later.
🏰 Conclusion at Engelbrektskyrkan
The walk reaches its climax at Engelbrektskyrkan.
High above the city, we stop and look out over Stockholm.
Here the stories fall into place:
about the architects, the visions, the people and the ideas that shaped modern Stockholm.
