More about the tour

Experience the magic of Söder's heights, Mariaberget Södermalm, through the eyes of the green guide – Stefan Maurbakken. Join us on a memorable and exciting city expedition through the historic quarters where Stockholm was once at its most vibrant, hard-working and colourful.

We start at Yttersta Tvärgränd, where living conditions were harsh before 1861, when running water was finally introduced. The Swedish film classic Anderssonskans Kalle was filmed here, while Söderkåkar was filmed higher up and Rännstensungar further down. Through alleys and streets above Ringvägen, you will hear about overcrowding, diseases, polluted water and the high infant mortality rate – and how the workers' living conditions changed over time.

We take a deep dive into history by reading aloud from tax registers, where we see exactly how many people lived in each house and what occupations they had. Tobacco was once grown on Skinnarviksberget, while beer was brewed in the blocks below.

We continue along Monteliusvägen, where rope makers and street urchins once roamed the alleys. Some of Söder's most famous profiles also lived here – Ivar Lo-Johansson and Eugène Jansson.

The city walk ends at Södermalmstorg, near the Hilton hotel.
