Power, everyday life and people between the walls

Gamla Stan is more than facades and cobblestones.
It is a city where power and everyday life have always lived side by side.

We start at Riddarhuset - the palace of the nobility and the face of the Swedish Empire.
Here, the vision of Stockholm as the capital took shape.
Stone replaced wood. New squares were planned.
A city grew - built to show strength, order and ambition.

Along the water we meet Bondeska palatset.
A house where royalty, nobility and justice have intersected through the centuries - and which is still part of Stockholm's power today.

At Mynttorget we stand on an old border.
Here the city wall once stood.
Today the place is filled with new voices - but still with the same weight.

We move into the alleys.
Narrow passages where life was once dense: craftsmen, merchants, sailors.
An international city already then - with languages, scents and goods from all over the Baltic Sea.

At Vera Siöcrona's square we stop.
A story of commitment and resistance.
About how a person can influence the city's future - and save what would otherwise have been lost.

At Slottsgården, the center of power opens up.
Here lay Tre Kronor - the castle that burned in 1697.
From the ashes, the current castle grew.
Strict. Controlled. European.

Between the castle and Storkyrkan we meet Olaus Petri.
Under our feet - an old cemetery.
Around us - the city's oldest room.
A place where life and death have always been close.

We end at Stortorget.
An open room filled with layers.
Trade, celebration, tragedy - and everyday life.

When we leave here, Gamla Stan will hopefully have changed.
From postcard to living city.
A place to read - step by step.
