Free walking tour in Stockholm? Here is the truth behind "free tours"

You have probably seen them in the city center: groups of tourists following a guide with a colorful umbrella, often with a sign that says "Free Tour". The concept is smart – or so it seems at first glance. But what does a free walking tour really mean?

The short answer is: they are not free. The longer answer is about expectations, working conditions and the value of knowledge.

A "free tour" is marketed as free, but in reality relies on participants tipping the guide afterwards – if they think it was worth it. It is a system based on goodwill rather than transparency.

But the guide does not work voluntarily. In fact, it is often guides who depend on each participant to cover their expenses. In some cases, parts of the tips left also go to a parent company or booking platform. This is not always clear to the customer.
