More about the tour
Lärkstaden and Villastaden
From Humlegården's roots to Lärkstaden's towers
A city walk about architecture, ideas and the city's dreams
Join us on a city walk in Stockholm where we dig under the roots in Humlegården – a green oasis that holds far more history than you might think. Here, among foliage and park benches, linger echoes of ideas and opinions that shaped the city. Perhaps you hear August Strindberg's voice, muttering about the gray dreariness of the stone city and his thoughts on the esplanade system. But what actually happened when Stockholm grew – and Villastaden took shape?
From the park, we move into Villastaden, an area built for privacy, status and architectural imagination. There are no shops or cafes here – just stately villas where towers, sculptures and unexpected details compete for attention. The houses tell of a time when people built to be seen, impress and mark belonging. We talk about networks such as Tuesday with the Twelves, Idun and The Nine – associations where the intellectuals of the time met over conversations, ideas and coffee, with the ambition to change the world.
The walk continues along Danderydsgatan, often described as one of Stockholm's most beautiful streets. Here, the feeling is almost continentally English: red brick walls, pointed roofs and a quiet rhythm that brings to mind a small town rather than the inner city.
Behind the next bend opens Lärkstaden, built between 1907 and 1917 after Per Olof Hallman's city plan. The hilly terrain was tamed into an urban space with winding streets, small plots, lush greenery and houses that interact rather than compete. Here, villas and apartment buildings meet in an almost fairytale-like whole. Over time, embassies and offices have moved in, and the area has changed – but always with a special dignity.
The walk ends at Engelbrektskyrkan, a landmark that rises above the city. Here we stop. Breathe. Look out over Stockholm. A place that invites reflection – and perhaps a silent thank you to Strindberg and his contemporaries for the ideas that still shape our city.
