Katarina Church – Fires, funerals and resurrection
Join us to Katarina Church, a symbol of Stockholm. Read about fires, funerals and an impressive resurrection.
On the mountain above Slussen, she stands like a queen in white and gold.
Katarina Church has looked out over Stockholm for more than three hundred years – over poverty and prosperity, fires and rebirth. Here, tears have been shed, bells have tolled and souls have found rest.
But Katarina Church is more than a building.
She is a survivor.

🔥 The fires – when the fire tested the faith
The first major fire occurred in 1723. It is said that the flames could be seen all the way to Kungsholmen, and that molten copper ran down the church hill like lava. The church's interior was destroyed, but already that same year, the people gathered for collections, prayers, and promises: Katarina would be rebuilt.
Two hundred and eighty years later, in the summer of 1990, the unthinkable happened again.
A spark in the roof, a wind that picked up – and soon the church was once again in flames. Stockholm fell silent that day.
But just like before, Katarina rose from the ashes, with its dome golden and its heart intact.
When it was rededicated in 1995, people spoke of a miracle – a meeting between past and present. Original drawings, modern techniques, and volunteer hands brought her back to life.
⚰️ The funerals – the city's memories in marble and soil
Katarina Churchyard is the final resting place for a cross-section of Stockholm's soul.
Here lie actors, poets, musicians, and politicians side by side – people who have all, in their own way, shaped our culture and our collective memory.
Among the most visited graves are those of Mikael Nyqvist, Gösta Ekman, Anna Lindh, and Cornelis Vreeswijk.
A simple walk among the paths becomes a journey through Swedish contemporary history – with voices that still seem to echo between the lindens.
The cemetery also tells of the city's older layers: children who died in the cholera epidemics, craftsmen and sailors from the 18th-century Katarina parish, and women whose names were silenced in the church records but whose life stories are preserved in stone.
🌅 The resurrection – hope in stone and light
There is something deeply symbolic in the fact that the church stands on a mountain.
As if she always knew that she had to stand tall to have the strength to fall – and rise again.
Katarina Church is a story about Stockholm itself: about the fires that shaped the city, about the people who refused to give up, and about the light that always finds its way back.
When the evening sun colors the dome golden and the church bells ring over Södermalm, it feels as if she is saying:
“I have seen you all. I have heard your prayers, your laughter, and your tears. And I remain.”
🍷 Experience the place with a view and a glass in hand
