More about the tour

Welcome to a magical city walk where we explore Astrid Lindgren's Stockholm – the city that inspired one of Sweden's most beloved authors and her fantastic stories.

But the journey begins long before she came to the capital. Hear about Astrid Lindgren's upbringing on the Näs farm outside Vimmerby, where she grew up with her siblings in a safe, rural environment with her parents Samuel August and Hanna. Here, her love for storytelling, play, and freedom was born. Astrid was a good student in school and had several close friends – but it was play that attracted her the most. She loved to climb trees, play Indian, and invent adventures, just like her characters would later do.

We follow her journey to Stockholm, where she had several professions before becoming an author – journalist, secretary, and editor. Hear about how life in the big city shaped her, her passion for jazz, and what it was like to become a single mother at the age of 19. Astrid later had another child, and it was for her daughter Karin that she one evening told a story about a red-haired girl with freckles – a story that changed children's literature forever.

The walk takes us through Atlaskvarteren and Vasaparken, where Astrid lived for a large part of her life and wrote many of her beloved books. We pass Sabbatsbergs Hospital and the Garden of the Senses, before reaching Tegnérlunden, a place she passed almost daily for 25 years on her way to work. Here you will hear about the boy Bo Vilhelm Olsson, who one day disappeared from our world and became Mio in Mio, My Son.

And of course, we celebrate Pippi Longstocking, who turns 80 on May 21 this year! The strong, independent, and headstrong girl that Astrid created has inspired generations around the world.
