Medieval times, mead and mysteries

Medieval Stockholm – in alleys, stone and memories

In the alleys of the Old Town, a Stockholm opens up where the Middle Ages is still close to the surface. Between masonry, built-over passages and narrow courtyards, a city of crafts, trade and strictly regulated everyday life is formed. Seafarers, merchants and city workers lived here close together – close to the water, the church and the law.

The traces of locksmiths, purse makers and overcutters are still present in stone and room. In churches and chapels, the memory of smoke from wax and resin lingers, of prayer and everyday life, while guildhalls and council chambers testify to justice, order – and punishment.

Around Kåkbrinken, the city's harsher sides become clear. The presence of the city law is felt in every step. Anchor ties, blinders and Själagården's vault tell of a city that emerges from the 13th century, characterized by trade, control and community.

Along the shoreline, wooden docks and warehouses meet the rhythm of the water. Under the alleys rest traces of Greyfriars, merchants and more subversive activities – sometimes near the mythical Flugmötet.

The tour ends with non-alcoholic mead and snacks, in an environment where the pulse of the Middle Ages can still be felt in stone, scent and story.
