Celebrity walk in the Northern Cemetery
Join a different and fascinating city walk in the Northern Cemetery in Stockholm – a place where history, culture and celebrity meet.
Just like in famous cemeteries in London, Rome and Paris, here we seek traces of Sweden's great and lesser-known personalities.
This is a walk about lives lived, ideas that shaped the country – and about how memories, identity and belonging take place in the city's landscape.
From Karlberg's Royal Estate to the celebrities' resting place
The Northern Cemetery was inaugurated in 1827 by Bishop Johan Olof Wallin, a moment that Märta Helena Reenstierna – Årstafrun – carefully documented in her diary.
The place was planned in French-classicist style, with avenues, open spaces and semicircular corridors – an expression of the ideals of its time regarding order, aesthetics and memory.
Here, generations of Stockholmers rest, side by side with people who have had a decisive impact on Sweden's history.
Meet Sweden's icons
The walk begins in the oldest parts of the cemetery. Here we meet graves belonging to some of the country's most influential names, including:
Nils Ericson, engineer and railway builder
Lars Johan Hierta, publicist and founder of Aftonbladet
August Blanche, author and social debater
We also stop at graves for Franz Berwald, Alfred Nobel's family and actress Lena Nyman – people who in various ways have left their mark on Swedish culture and society.
Monuments, mausoleums and power
On Lindhagen's hill we meet some of the Northern Cemetery's most monumental graves and mausoleums. Here rest, among others:
Paul U. Bergström (PUB) – entrepreneur and department store founder
Folke Bernadotte – diplomat and peace mediator
Rudolf Wall – journalist
Here are also the graves for Robert and Tyra Nobel, as well as the Lindhagen and Bünsow families. The monuments tell of wealth, influence – and of how memory takes shape in stone.
Other voices in the city's history
During the walk, we also make a stop at Polish and Roma burial grounds, where monuments, symbols and inscriptions tell of other traditions and ways of remembering the dead.
Here opens a perspective on a Stockholm shaped by migration, vulnerability and belonging – life stories that rarely take place in the big stories, but which are a natural part of the city's history.
Ending at Strindberg's black cross
The city walk ends at August Strindberg's well-known black, tarred wooden cross.
A simple grave marker – but loaded with symbolism.
Here, greatness and modesty, conflict and legacy meet.
A walk for the curious
